Track lighting got a bit of a bad reputation in the 1990s but when used properly it is still functional and beautiful especially for the kitchen. Pot lights aimed straight down will add general illumination but not necessarily hit the counter. An angled ceiling light on a track can put task lighting exactly where you need it. Undercabinet lighting can also achieve a similar effect. Combining both will make task lighting in the kitchen look effortless.

Cove lights are built into niches that hide the light source (often a plain LED strip) but hidden lights can also be obscured by medicine cabinets shelving or storage units.

Visual cuing provides an additional reference point for judging distance or depth when entering a space or approaching objects. The lighting at the base of these cabinets or toe-kick lighting contrasts well with the dark floor and midtone cabinetry creating a readily visible contrast. But people will just think it's cool.

Although floor lamps and table lamps obviously differ in their typical size and placement both have the ability to add gentle task lighting for reading while also infusing a general glow wherever they stand targeting anywhere from the center of a room (say on a sofa table) to a dim corner.

Halogen compact fluorescent and LED bulbs come in a range of warm or cool hues. Much like the color of your walls the type of glow you want is mostly a personal decision. If your walls are covered in cooler tones you might want to warm them up with a lightbulb that casts a warm glow. Conversely you may want a cooler glow to brighten up a darker space.
